On January 12, 2022, Sri Lanka Airport Expressway (CKE) project undertaken by China MCC20 won the 19^th Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prize. This is another grand prize for scientific & technological innovation won by the project after the Luban Award (for overseas project). The project has won two big awards. This is a miracle in the expressway construction history at home and abroad, representing the highest level in the Group’s history.

Sri Lanka Airport Expressway (CKE) project is located in the northern suburb of the capital city Colombo, and is the key project that is connected to the external and central expressways to form a road network. It is also a major project of the Belt and Road Initiative, to which both China and Sri Lanka pay close attention in the building of the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road.

It is the first expressway built by the company on a deep peat soil foundation. The company developed the key technology for construction of filling piles in the areas covered by deep peat soil, and effectively controlled the construction quality. The company solved the worldwide problems in project design and construction according to China’s national standards, tackled the bottlenecks that no highways can be built in the places covered by peat soil and European and Asian contractors all failed in the construction, and fulfilled the expectations and dreams of the Sri Lankan in half a century! This is of great importance for promoting the tourism and economic development in Sri Lanka.

After four years of tenacious fight, China Metallurgical Group Corporation (MCC) has finally built the first country-level representative road for Sri Lanka, and demonstrated a beautiful and smooth “golden channel” with excellent quality and scientific & technological innovation achievements to the world.

Since the project was completed and opened to traffic, it has promoted the regional economic development of Sri Lanka and brought about favorable economic and social benefits. As a practice of the Belt and Road Initiative, it has enhanced the company’s international market competitiveness for general contracting of highway projects, actively encouraged the company’s core technology in the field of highway engineering to go global, and effectively increased the influence of MCC in South Asia.

The honors that the company has obtained can not only demonstrate its top level design, but also show the wisdom of MCC to be a pioneer of scientific & technological innovation! While commending the pioneers that have made their international debut, this project can also encourage the people of MCC to take one step further in implementing the Belt and Road Initiative.
